Evaluation

At the beginning of the project I wasn’t too excited for the idea of the re-release and all of the marketing side of the project but once we started to do the research I started to get into it. The movie I chose was Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, I originally chose the movie for the photography aspects of the movie but I soon become attached to the whole movie and what it stood for.

I started by researching the director Baz Luhrmann and his past which was really interesting, I began to see why he done certain things within his movies, you can see that he is very influenced by his childhood. It was at this stage when I knew I had to keep these aspects in place when we did the re-release of the film.

I began by starting by looking at tackling the posters first, My go to process was the double exposure technique which was shown to us by Dan, this gave me the idea of using the bright lights of Verona within a portrait rather than filling a page with colour. I started by experimenting with the double exposure on Romeo which then lead to the idea of having individual poster as well as a joint one. I decided to keep the double exposure theme running through from posters to the DVD covers and for my Romeo poster I went down to the arcades to take a picture of the neon lights to put within the portrait.  For my DVD covers I decided to keep the same as the posters so it would be more recognisable by fans, keeping the same material for the product creates the familiarity so we become more recognisable.

After I had my posters and covers I turned my focus to the company and what our logo would be, after researching it was clear to keep the logo simple, clean and clear. Coming up with the actual company name was what I found hardest but again I kept it simple and thought about my personal characteristics rather than just going with my name, Im known for always wearing my Blackhoodie so the idea for Blackhoodie productions was born. After coming up with the name for the production company the logo design was made simple, just a black hoodie. The logo is unique and although being a bit strange it is what it says.

An Additional part of my movie re release was for the soundtrack to be remastered, I took inspiration for this from BBC Radio1 when they remastered The Drive and edited a scene from the movie. I researched the movies current soundtrack and looked at the choices behind the song that were chosen. 1996 was the rise of the MTV culture and you can see it with Luhrmann’s choice of costumes and mixture of pop and classical music. The music was done by Nellee Hooper who actually received 6 Grammys for the albums he has produced, I wanted to look at what genres are popular now so I looked across a number of platforms like iTunes, Spotify and the UK charts. This gave a clear indicator that Pop/Alternative music is the most popular and would appeal to my target audience.

After comparing two EPK’s I wanted to make sure I got the right balance of the both but when I was looking at the two there was only one clear favourite and that was the High School Musical 2 EPK. This is because they included a lot of market research and showed how there film has/will reach people.  The main selling point of my movie was the new remastered soundtrack and after doing target audience research I found out that a lot of people were excited for this aspect of the movie to come out.

When it came to presenting my EPK I struggled and ended up rushing the whole thing so I could just sit down again but in the process I messed up my chance to get a better grade. When I stood up my mind went blank and I didn’t know what to say. I should have had note prepared for the presentation to talk through everything in depth like I had planned to.

Overall although I was forever dreading the presentation I did enjoy the project and the tasks that we completed, I think I have learnt a lot from this project both with design work and theory based with the likes of semiotics and it importance to photography. If I was to do this again I would make sure that I was more prepared for the presentation so I could go into depth about all of the work I had produced.

Its clear that after my presentation that my presentation wasn’t good enough as I rushed through it and forgot to say my key points. If I was to do my presentation to do my presentation again I would make notes and to read from.

Audience Theory

Effects theory looks at how text is consumed by audiences, it mainly focuses on the negative influences that the media can have for example sexual and violent content.

The hypodermic needle effect theory states that the audience take in and believe the ideologies in all off the media texts.  The theory states that these texts function in a one directional communication process, the audience does not think or disagree with the messages within the media.

Merchandise

As part of the re-release we would be looking to release a set of merchandise for fans to buy, After looking for official Romeo and Juliet merchandise I couldn’t find any. The only merchandise that is available for the fans is the unofficial stuff that I could find over on Redbubble, Etsy, eBay and Cafe press but all of these were quotes from the play, rather than being related to the 1996 movie.

After looking at this I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to look at a number of merchandise products to make available to purchase, I think the key areas would be T-shirts, Jumpers and posters. These are commonly found in the merchandise shop for movies.

For the T-shirts I wanted to look at 5 different designs and 4 different colours.

I chose the white and black colours as they are neutral and I made them both neutral to the movie with them both including Romeo and Juliet on them. My favourite of the 2 is the black one with the text, I like it as it is simple but also stands out to people especially with both Romeo and Juliet place into each text.

After looking at those designs I decided to make character tops, one for Romeo and the other for Juliet. The reason behind choosing the colours was because they relate to the family colours of the Montage’s and the Capulets. This way the fans can have their favourite character and support them bit like the Twighlight series and the ‘Team Jacob’ and ‘Team Edward’

I decided to get 500 T-shirts in each size and each design ranging from Small the double XL. (10,500 total t shirt order)

  • White T-shirt costs – £1.18
  • Black, Blue and Red T-shirt’s costs – £1.54

To decide on the pricing of the tops I decided to get both primary and secondary research. To do this I would look at what other movie franchises price their tops at and also ask people what they would be willing to spend on merchandise.

Primary

  • Lewis- £20
  • Kurt-£20
  • Caroline-£30

Secondary

  • Disney are selling mens star wars t-shirts at £20
  • Universal are selling  mens harry potter t-shirts at $32.95 which is £22.05
  • Warner Bros are selling Lord of The Rings t-shirts at around £17

after looking in to the prices I think that I would be best to price the tops at £20 per T-shirt, this way we can make substantial profit from the printing and not be too overpriced that we don’t make sales.

The total price for the t-shirts to be printed is £19,212.50 and if all of the tops sold at £20 per one we would make £210,000 and thats a profit of £190,788.

After looking I decided to look at hoodie as another item of clothing that could be a good seller with the fan base. There would be 3 hoodies designs with 3 separate colours. The hoodies will come in sizes from S-XXL in black, red and blue. Like the T-shirts the character specific designs come with in red and blue with either Romeo or Juliet on them relating to the family colours.

I think it would be harder to sell the hoodies as they are more expensive but so thats why I thought it would be better to order less of these than the t-shirts.

The original order for the hoodies will be 100 of each in every size making 1500 in a total order , this  will cost a total of £11,004.00 and if we sell the hoodies at £35 per hoodie we would make a total of 52,500 and a profit of £41,496.

Posters are another good way for fans to get their hands on official merchandise for a cheaper price than the tops, some fans want to have merchandise but aren’t fans of wearing the tops or hoodies so posters and mugs are good ways to get extra income.

Romeo+Juliet Final posterScreen Shot 2015-12-03 at 16.23.46Poster Juliet FINAL 2.jpg

For 100 images of each design it would cost a total price of £267, The posters would be sold for £10 each. This makes the poster more affordable for people and could encourage people do multi purchase on the store.

In the individual Romeo + Juliet editions you will receive a free poster inside. The Romeo and Juliet poster editions will cost slightly more but you will also get a redemption code for a free t-shirt from the store.

If we sold all of the posters got sold we would make £3000 of sales and a profit £2,733. This would be the smallest profit out of all of the merchandise

Movie Soundtracks

Screen Shot 2015-11-30 at 12.27.35

As one of my special features for the 20th anniversary re-release I am changing the soundtrack but movie soundtracks don’t only stay in the movie but are also released as an album. The important meaning of the soundtrack is to the viewer a greater experience not only visually. I think the reason that the movie soundtracks do well is because the audience can feel closer to the movie with each and individual track.

DVD Cover Research

Walt-Disney-Blu-Ray-Covers-Robin-Hood-40th-Anniversary-Edition-Blu-Ray-walt-disney-characters-34503806-1624-2048doctor_who_50th_anniversary_dvd_cover_by_mrpacinohead-d6wu3l7119Blues_Bros_25th_AE

Looking at these covers of anniversary movies they all are very similar to each other with the minor detail. All of the covers have the year of anniversary this is something that I should use within my re-release as it seems to be a popular approach. I like the way that the anniversary banners don’t overtake the design of the front cover so for my front cover I think it would be better to have mine along the top.
